An introduction of sorts

HEY! 


My name is Shane and I'm a bit of a writer.  I suppose I should start with the plan for this blog.   I'd like to talk about audio recording, cool products I'm excited about, guitars, guitar pedals, possibly DIY audio stuff.  

A little bit of background, I was a "audio engineer" for 18 years at a small record label in Canada.  I am now a full time music retail sales person.  I've written a few articles that have been published about music.  I've written a bunch of Dungeons & Dragons adventures (of course this has nothing to do with audio!).   Interesting tidbit I just learned, technically in Canada you cannot call yourself an Engineer without a accreditation.  Which basically means that saying Audio Engineer isn't really a title in Canada.  Alas I was the guy behind the board, pro-toolsing stuff, cheering on musicians, etc.  Call it what you want.

I've never really been an effect guy other than distortion or overdrive.  Actually for a long time the only pedal I had was a Danoelectro Daddy O and a crybaby wah.  Most often I wouldn't even use the wah.  A few years ago I bought myself a Boss ME50 and it's been a very fulfilling piece of musical gear.  Part of the reason I bought the ME50 was that I've been playing lead in a band and I needed a few more effects to compliment what we were doing.  The other reason was money, I bought the multi-effects board to stop myself from buying pedals.  I work at a music store and there's a violent amount of eye candy and good deals that come in every day.  This was my way of stopping myself going crazy!   The Boss ME50 is going to continue to be one of my main recording boards.  It's infinitely handy to be able to pull up a specific sound (garage rock, dreamy weirdness, etc) and start recording.  (more on that later).  The downfall in a...

Going Dawless

You may have heard this term "Dawless".  The general idea is to stop using a computer for recording.   Part of the reason is that you have to force yourself to be a better musician!  When you are recording linear there is a lot less possibilities for fixing things, etc.  The other reason is to honestly get down to business.  There are a lot of people doing instrumental jams with synth setups, everything wired together via midi using a sequencer and sometimes loop pedals.   There is a really good community on reddit for that kinda of thing right here:  https://www.reddit.com/r/dawless/ What I'm talking about though is going to dawless to create acoustic music.  Harkening back to the old days of using a 4 track cassette recorder (or something similar).  The general idea is to take the computer away, and the crazy amount of options you have.  A lot of the times I end up in "analysis paralysis" trying to get a drum loop going or pi...
